The vibe and tribe of Italy is unmatched. Stories from the region are brilliantly executed on the screen.

The Tearsmith is a recent creation from the country. Streaming on Netflix, the movie is said to be emotionally romantic.

It is based on the novel of the same name by Erin Doom and runs for 105 minutes.

The Tearsmith Synopsis

Rigel and Nica are adopted by a family after years of living together at the same orphanage. The duo forms an unlikely bond against the traditional conventions set by society.

Directed by Alessandro Genovesi, the movie stars Simone Baldasseroni (Rigel), Caterina Ferioli (Nica), Alessandro Bedetti (Lionel), Roberta Rovelli, Orlando Cinque, and others.

The Tearsmith: Positives

The film’s idea makes way for a world draped in the shadows of enigma. Not that it has a supernatural theme but the movie does try to present things differently.

Nica loses her parents at a young age and is admitted to an orphanage. She spends several years at the place before getting adopted by a couple who has just lost their child. But she is not the only person the couple adopts. They also assume responsibility for another child, Rigel, unaware of the mysterious past the two kids share.

The Tearsmith Plot Outline

The Tearsmith departs from the normal way of narrating a story. It offers a murky, dark, and distinctly quirky landscape, putting conventions to rest.

The movie attempts to envelop you in a thick, rumbled atmosphere of romance, intrigue, and mystery.

While the emotional pitch might fall short, the not-so-straightforward love story brings two unlikely individuals together.

They are reluctant yet attracted to each other, bringing several layers of complexity into the narrative.

I am a bit averse to the idea of calling the story offbeat because of the formulaic external elements included in the romantic love story.

But I have no right to take away the willingness on the part of the makers to push boundaries.

Furthermore, the film succeeds in building tension through the steamy scenes, opting for a slow-burning approach that heightens anticipation and intensifies emotional impact.

The intricate nature of intimacy allows you to understand the characters’ desires and vulnerabilities.

Undoubtedly, The Tearsmith’s screenplay has flaws. Still, it delivers a somewhat engaging cinematic experience with disparate elements weaved together into a cohesive whole.

Lastly, the quiet, soothing music serves as the perfect accompaniment to the film’s dark, romantic ambiance.

How are the Performances?

Simone Baldasseroni takes on the role of Rigel. His deadpan-ish face gives the character an enigmatic cover, adding an intriguing layer to his character.

With a distinctly charming demeanor, he works wonders to nourish his screen presence. The actor draws viewers into his mysterious world with ease.

Caterina Ferioli impresses as Nica. She brings a sense of affability and sweetness to the character.

Despite her held-back nature, Ferioli’s expressions are on point, conveying a depth of emotion that resonates with audiences.

Her performance is honest, smart and nuanced.

The Tearsmith: Downsides

Having discussed its moments of brilliance, let’s peel back the layers to state a few cracks starting with the novel-like narrative.

Sure, it’s a bold move to incorporate first-person storytelling into a film, but in this case, it feels like the weight of the language is dragging the plot down.

Moreover, some viewers might find themselves tapping their fingers impatiently as The Tearsmith meanders along at a leisurely pace.

But perhaps the most glaring flaw lies in the film’s emptiness. There are times when it feels like the story is just treading water, with scenes that serve little purpose other than to fill space.

The Tearsmith doesn’t get the benefit of ‘hindsight.’

Sure, you might find yourself swept up in the moment while watching the film but in hindsight, it’s hard to shake the feeling that something’s missing.

Additionally, some of the sequences in the plot appear as blunders of the highest levels. The makers never really expose the relationship of the lead pair.

However, they signal something deeply concerning. While doing so, they focus on unrelated gestures, foolish enough to make you scratch your head.

A scintillating background music could have breathed life into the film, elevating it to new heights.

Instead, we’re left with a stray-jacked score that does little to enhance the narrative.

And let’s not overlook the absence of emotions. Unfortunately, the scope for sentiments is wiped under the carpet in the quest of making a sensual breakout.

Stream or Skip?

The Tearsmith aims for classic status but falls short, sacrificing natural empathy in the process. It’s a shame, really – with a few tweaks here and there, it could have been a masterpiece.
