Divorce (2024) Movie Ending Explained

The families gather at the party where Ilona introduces her new boyfriend, Tomek. Monika makes a fuss about the delay in getting the divorce.

She tells Jacek that her father has already made wedding arrangements for September. When things calm down, Ala and Andrzej joke about Jacek’s parenting skills.

The party ends and Monika and Malgosia head to the restroom together. The former thanks the latter for agreeing to divorce Jacek.

Later, Jacek gets Monika a cab as she has some work to attend to. On the other hand, when Malgosia and Andrzej’s cab arrives, she also expresses a desire to stay a bit longer with Ilona and Tomek.

Even Ala wants to stay but Andrzej orders her to come home with him as she has school tomorrow.

Jacek, Malgosia, Ilona, and Tomek head to a bar and enjoy themselves over a few drinks. They dance freely in each other’s company.

Ilona suggests to Malgosia that she should go a bit easy on Ala. Probably, the two had a talk earlier when they were at the restaurant.

She says Ala is going through a tough age and Malgosia should cut her some slack. If she wants to quit music class, as a mother, Gosia should back her without getting upset about it.

When the night ends and they head out, Jacek tries to flirt with Malgosia. They playfully come close but stop before crossing any limits.

At her house, Malgosia can sense the situation is slightly grim. Ala leaves the breakfast table when she sits down while Andrzej leaves saying he is booked for a ride.

She tries to talk to him but he says they can do it later. When she insists, he drops a taunt implying that usually she is the one who is busy with Jacek these days.

At the practice session, Malgosia comes to know that several students are absent because of various reasons.

It is possibly because students have very little interest in performing a bland creation for the station opening.

Malgosia tells her daughter that she will respect her decision but she wants her to think again before coming to a conclusion.

Ala shouldn’t simply quit seven years of hard work just because of her disagreements with Malgosia.

The young girl nods and says she will give it a thought. Moreover, she tells her mother that Andrzej has lost the grant.

He didn’t tell Malgosia because he didn’t want to upset her.

Ala further says that he needs Malgosia’s support in this situation.

Malgosia and Jacek attend the court for the third time, where Father Giuseppe joins them through video conferencing from the Vatican.

To the couple’s surprise, the authorities have this time called in a witness who is none other than Father Czeslaw, who had administered them the wedding vows.

Father Marian questions him on several fronts regarding the day of the wedding and the latter answers them with preciseness.

Eventually, he denies that Jacek was under the influence at the time. Moreover, he says Jacek didn’t put the ring in another finger as claimed by him.

After Marian finishes questioning, Czeslaw is about to leave when Malgosia comes up with a final idea.

She decides to bluff him and announces that she has a question to ask him.

As part of her plan, Malgosia asks him about the time when Ilona was baptized in 2001. She asks whether he remembers that day.

Then she just gives him a lead and Czeslaw climbs on it. He goes on to describe the day and how he handled the little Ilona.

However, in reality, Ilona was baptized in Bydgoszcz and Father Czeslaw had nothing to do with it. She proves that he had been lying all along through his teeth.

It allows her to challenge Czeslaw’s credibility as a witness and she demands his entire testimony be retracted.

Marian asks for some extra time to deliver the verdict and he proposes to postpone the hearing. This triggers Jacek and he lashes out angrily at him.

He says that he is fed up with the drama and refuses to wait any longer. Moreover, he confesses to having lied about being drunk.

On the contrary, he blames it on his decision to marry at a young age due to which he couldn’t take care of Malgosia, which eventually led to their separation.

Reacting to his outburst, Marian says that the hearing is over and Tomasz informs them that the verdict will be emailed to them.

However, all of Jacek and Malgosia’s efforts go to waste when Father Giuseppe says he couldn’t hear a word due to poor connection.

The estranged couple leaves the premises and Jacek thanks Malgosia for going through all of it with him.

He says he is grateful. The lady reciprocates as well before leaving for her musical concert at the station opening ceremony.

She gets late to the bus, but still, the students welcome her with applause. Moreover, Malgosia is happily surprised to see her daughter sitting inside.

All the students are in attendance, including the ones who had faked health issues a day ago.

The bus driver takes a shortcut according to the GPS but seeing the condition of the road, Malgosia asks him whether they are going in the wrong direction.

As they are getting late, she asks him to speed up. However, the minute he does so, the bumps on the road lead to a flat tire.

Now, they don’t have a medium to go in the first place. Malgosia decides to walk to the location, which is still 1-2 kilometers away.

The kids get tired and feel worn out before Malgosia manages to hitch a ride on a passing tractor. To cheer them up, she reveals a new plan for their performance.

Since the students never wanted to perform on the bland tune, she allows them to play something upbeat.

At the train station, their turn arrives but when they don’t make an appearance, the organizers move forward.

However, just then the gang enters in the tractor they had hitched. They ride on the railway track and stop in front of the gathering.

Malgosia gets off the tractor and green lights the start of their performance. Everybody loves the upbeat vibe in their music and showers them with applause.

Andrzej also arrives and witnesses the event from a distance.

Malgosia requests Ala to travel on the bus so that she can have a much-needed conversation with Andrzej in their car.

The young girl happily agrees.

On their way, Malgosia appreciates Andrzej’s understanding and patience.  They end up having sex in the car.

The scene cuts to the day of the verdict and the Church grants Jacek and Malgosia the divorce.

Later, he marries Monika and Tomasz administers the wedding wows. The movie ends here.

Why Was it Difficult to Get Divorced Through the Church?

The priests at the church consider marriage a sacred bond. Angry with the rising divorces and the deteriorating importance of marriage, they want couples to give it another chance.

In the film, it also became an ego tussle between the father and the couple after a point. The Church became too rigid to move.
