American film, Rebel Ridge, recently premiered on Netflix. I will explain its ending in detail, including the last half an hour.

So, if you have yet to watch it, maybe you should stop right here.

Before I begin, I would like to first address the crux of the movie.

What Was the Corruption in Rebel Ridge?

The city cops once illegally searched someone, which snowballed into the person’s wrongful death.

They had to pay a settlement amount to the family, which nearly bankrupted the town.

The Chief’s department was deemed uninsurable.

He was given a year to modernize it.

The judges wanted the Chief gone and hence, they gave him a mandate to reform his department. They knew he wouldn’t be able to do it.

There was simply no money to modernize the department.

The judges wanted the state police to take over, which is why they used the reform mandate as a ploy.

However, the Chief was smart.

Since he didn’t have any money, he decided to make some.

He did $100k forfeitures in the first month.

In fact, it was made legal as the money seized was put back into the system. It was used in the town’s debts, payroll, and public works.

With bad financial health, anything that might put the department in legal jeopardy was a liability for the cops.

For example, a traffic stop that went wrong might end up in court, which would cause legal expenditure.

Hence, the chief decided to kick such charges down to misdemeanors. By doing so, he made sure the cases stayed in the town court, which lacked public defenders to contest bail or adjournments.

Nobody objected to it because the money kept their payrolls running.

The people arrested on misdemeanor charges were kept under detention for 90 days because it was part of the deal with the judges.

The dashcam footage of the cops was kept in the courthouse.

The cops couldn’t access it on their own.

If the footages are not held evidentiary or subpoenaed for 90 days, they are deleted.

It is why the accused were detained for 90 days.

If their case were to be called in court, the dash cam footage would also be pulled up, which would prove the police’s high-handedness.

Terry and Summer got all the above information from the Judge whose house they forcefully entered.

Now, let’s get to the business end of this blog.

Rebel Ridge Movie Ending Explained

Terry and Summer rush to the courthouse to secure the hard drives containing the dash cam footage. They break into the basement, where the drives are stored.

As the duo traverses through the lanes, they find some cops spilling kerosene on the floor of the basement.

They put it on fire but just before the flame could reach Summer, she puts it off using the coconut water in her bag.

Terry estimates the time at hand for them to be only 30 seconds. This is because the cops are expecting a blaze.

Summer quickly checks the right places but finds the drives missing. Possibly, the cops have already taken them.

She then scours through a drawer and finds SD cards, which are used to back up data from the drive. But it only has data from the last week.

They get hold of it and find their way out. Ensuring the cops don’t doubt, Terry puts fire on the kerosene.

Summer stays inside saying she has something to get back. Terry tells her that he will wait for her in the alley.

He gets out and seats himself in the car. Summer, on the other hand, goes to the courthouse’s medical room to get her blood sample.

She finds it in the fridge, but before Summer can take it into possession, the cops come from behind and catch her.

They put her in the car and leave. Terry follows them with headlights turned off. From a distance, he sees them stopping near a police vehicle and then moving again.

Instead of going after the car, this time he rams into the police vehicle.

Terry pulls out the detective inside it and packs a few punches before asking him about Summer’s whereabouts.

However, the cop doesn’t know. Terry uses his walkie to connect with his counterparts. He eventually makes a swapping deal: Summer in exchange for the SD Cards at the Rebel Ridge, a nearby place.

But instead of going himself, he packs the cop inside the car and sends him to the ridge. The other cops are shocked to not find Terry.

Terry instead phones the station and has a conversation with the Chief.

He talks to him in puzzles and before the man can understand anything, he sees him breaking and entering the Storage/property room through the CCTVs.

All the cops waiting for Terry at the Rebel Ridge are called to the Station immediately.

Meanwhile, Terry starts collecting weapons and armories from the room. The chief goes there to look for him but he is shot by Terry.

Jessica points a gun at him before Terry tells her that he didn’t shoot the Chief with real bullets but beanbag rounds.

He then mentions Summer and says although she didn’t tell her name, it wasn’t a hard guess. Terry hands over the SD cards to her considering her to be on his team.

Meanwhile, the other cops station themselves outside. Terry tells the Chief that he will surrender himself upon Summer’s safe release.

Otherwise, he will burn the whole station.

He leaves a bottle of kerosene near him, wears a bulletproof jacket, and pours kerosene into a stash of cash.

But to his surprise, Jessica points the gun at him and connects with the cops outside. She tells them to hold fire.

This is because Jessica doesn’t want any bloodshed.

She follows him outside with a gun pointed at Terry’s head.  One of the detectives goes to rescue the Chief.

Steve asks for the SD cards and Jessica hands them over. The cop then destroys the cards. Steve tells Terry that he drugged Summer and now she is fast asleep in his car.

Marston, the cop who had intersected Terry’s bike initially, tries to stop the raging Steve from doing anything to Terry.

He asks him to calm down. Their talk turns into an argument. The Chief arrives and shoots Marston in the leg, leaving him bleeding.

The other cops get worried seeing their colleague’s condition and the Chief tries to console them. While they conversate, Terry turns around and receives a signal from Jessica.

He then picks up the bag, drags Marston, and takes shelter behind a police car. Terry throws gas shells at the cavalry.

He helps the injured cop, who, in turn, advises him to hit the disco lights, which will turn on the pre-event recording in the dash cam.

This way, they can have three minutes of past footage, which includes the Chief shooting Marston.

Terry leaves for the same, punching cops on the way. He comes across Steve and lands several punches at him, releasing all his anger.

When Terry gets to the car, he successfully turns on the dash cam.

He starts the car and parks it near Marston. With his advice, he treats Summer.

Terry puts Marston inside and gets on the road. The cop suggests he secure the DVR in case of a bail out.

He leaves the decision on the two of them and both Marston and Summer vote against it.

When all the police vehicles enclose them, Jesica helps their way. Not just that, she also ensures the Chief doesn’t become an issue.

Eventually, the trio reaches the hospital. The cops take over Marston while Terry takes Summer inside.

He then secures the DVR and sits inside the hospital keeping it on his lap.

The movie ends here.

Why Did Terry Secure the DVR?

Terry secured the DVR because it was the only proof against the Chief. It had the recording from the dash cam when the Chief shot Marston in front of the station.
