The movie is about an estranged family of siblings, all of whom have not met in decades. What brings them together is the reading of their ‘rich’ uncle’s will after his death.

Interestingly, the story is narrated by one of the siblings to make things enticing.

Inheritance 2024 Netflix Movie Story Explained

Dawid’s family, including his wife (Zosia), a daughter (Jozefina), and a younger son (Henryk), is on its way to his uncle’s house.

He describes Wladyslaw Fortuna as an unusual guy with whom they had lost touch over the years.

Apparently, the old man hosted the first TV game show, The Wheel of Truth, in Poland. He also invented the PESEL number, the real meaning of which is not disclosed in the film.

Dawid’s younger daughter has all sorts of theories about him, including that he was a spy, and he knew Bill Gates, who was also a spy.

Though the children didn’t want to go, it was uncle’s condition that each member of the family must attend.

Before they reach the house, the family stops at a gas station on the way.

Two other cars also stop there at the same time, apparently occupied by the other siblings, Natalia and Karol.

While Natalia is accompanied by her boyfriend, who is quite younger than him, Karol also has his fiancée by his side whose name is also Karol.

Natalia introduces Gustaw to everyone and starts kissing him out of the blue. The two Karols also follow suit.

The cousins get inside a shop at the gas station, where Karol accidentally spills tomato ketchup on Dawid’s clothes.

In retaliation to his careless approach, Natalia throws the ketchup on him. Then she asks the vendor, who knew their uncle, what kind of cars he had.

Once he lists out the names of some expensive cars, the race to reach the house first begins.

In essence, it meant whoever reached first would get a larger share of his property.

However, Gustaw isn’t bothered about it but his wife is. She shifts to the driving seat and the three cars indulge in a fierce race.

Their uncle’s house looks more like a dream mansion than a bungalow. The whole surrounding area is covered in snow.

The cousins are welcomed by Wladyslaw’s butler. Dawid describes the Butler as a hardworking man. In the wake of an upcoming snowstorm, he suggests they park their vehicles underground.

Everyone is in awe of the grand mansion as they step inside. At the dinner table, Dawid tells everyone that it’s been thirty years since they last met.

As he is also the narrator of the film, Dawid then goes on to introduce all the characters.

While Karol is Uncle’s nephew and works at a marketing firm, his partner is a psychotherapist.

Natalia is uncle’s niece and she is a famous crime novelist. Her books include a lot of sex.

Dawid doesn’t know the work profile of Gustaw.

He himself is a school teacher and his wife, Zosia, is a tax clerk.

Natalia shares with everybody that she would buy a yacht for herself from the money she would inherit.

Zosia would buy a new apartment and Karel would buy property, maybe in Hamburg or Portugal.

Dawid gets into an argument with the two Karels about whether they would buy kids since they cannot have their own.

Soon, the three families move into their rooms, situated adjacent to each other on the same floor with a lobby-like space between each of them.

The space is enough for a person or two to walk.

Natalia and Gustaw indulge in sex while the Karels discuss Dawid’s behavior.

On the other hand, Zosia thinks that Gustaw is with Natalia only for the money but Dawid doesn’t agree with her.

Since their financial condition isn’t that strong, she packs some of the room’s items in their bag to take them home.

The couple has an argument, which feels like a regular thing. It ends with whether they should tell their kids about something and that they have an appointment with ‘Doctor’ next week.

Henryk overhears his parents and thinks they are going to have another child very soon. However, Josefina crushes his imagination.

Everybody reassembles later in the night when the Butler takes centerstage and reads out the will.

It states that Wladyslaw has bequeathed all his money, savings, and earnings amounting to approximately USD 2 million to a local orphanage.

The announcement takes away all the glow from the siblings’ faces and leaves them frustrated.

The butler then reads out that the siblings can get rights to all of Wladyslaw’s inventions, trademarks, and patents by winning a game designed by their uncle himself.

All the members curse Wladyslaw and call him names.

However, in a shocking turn of events, Wladyslaw appears out of nowhere and stuns everybody.

In reality, he never died. The old man wanted the whole family to come together under one roof and nothing other than his ‘will’ could have done that.

Therefore, he faked his own death to lure them to his mansion. When asked, he shares the reason behind his act.

He has spent his whole life alone, away from his loved ones and he doesn’t want them to do the same.

They should mingle with each other, enjoy their company, and live happily before it’s too late. He tells them that the game thing is real and it will begin tomorrow.

Wladyslaw has spent a lot of time designing the game and hopes that his kids will do well. To initiate the game tomorrow, he hands them a tablet.

Zosia asks him about the worth of his patents. The old man gives an estimate of several million dollars.

He then unties his gown and stabs himself in the gut with a knife, leading to shocking expressions. However, to everyone’s surprise, nothing happens to Wladyslaw.

The man then shares that the T-shirt he is wearing is his latest invention. It is thin, flexible, bulletproof, and strong enough to handle such sharp attacks.

The whole family drinks and enjoys the night. Wladyslaw gives Henryk a cube made by him to play with.

Inside their rooms, everybody again curses the old man for his antics. Zosia feels that it would only be wise to stay on his good side as Wladyslaw will die one day and his wealth would be at stake.

The other two couples want to leave the place and not participate in the game tomorrow.

The next morning Jozefina discovers the dead body of Wladyslaw in the kitchen. She screams and everybody gathers at the place.

There is a knife in his chest and he is lying on the floor. They initially think that it is another one of his pranks.

But soon, they realize that Wladyslaw has died in reality. The butler comes in and checks his neck for a pulse but unfortunately, there is none.

The snowstorm makes it hard for the police to reach. But they eventually manage to arrive late in the evening, brought inside by the Butler.

Dawid narrates to the two cops the whole incident from the beginning. As they enter the hall, Zosia is awestruck by one of the detectives and they share a quick glance.

After an initial investigation of the crime scene, the cops come to the conclusion that Wladyslaw has been ‘murdered.’

Moreover, they think that the murderer is present inside the mansion.

Had there been an outside entry, they would have noticed tracks in the snow, which has been falling since yesterday.

The butler informs them that the outside of the estate is surrounded by CCTV but there are none inside.

All the cousins and their partners deny killing or playing any part in the killing of Wladyslaw.

Pursuing the case further, the cops ask for items mentioned in the old man’s will to safeguard them. But even the Butler isn’t aware of their whereabouts.

He tells them that Wladyslaw was very cautious about his patents and kept them to himself.

They come to an agreement that until the snowstorm dies, they all are shut down from the outside world.

The detectives then take their phones on the pretext that the murderer is amongst them.

One of them announces that the will, which may have been written as a joke, now becomes a legally binding document.

Therefore, everything goes to the orphanage and whoever wins the game will inherit the patents.

Amid the murmurs that begin after this statement, Wladyslaw’s voice captures the whole room’s attention.

The cops hand over the tablet (which the old man had given to the family) to the cousins, indicating the start of the game.

Wladyslaw gives them a riddle to begin the first stage. He says, “Who or what drives me the most?”

Everybody gathers in the garage and the cops ask the butler if he can help the cousins solve the riddle. But the latter is unaware of any clues.

Moreover, they also inform them that they can only have lunch once they have solved the riddle.

Simultaneously, the detectives begin questioning the cousins in Wladyslaw’s office. They begin with Zosia and, as expected, she tries to charm the cop with her smile.

What Happened at Zosia’s Questioning in Inheritance?

The cops start by asking her if she has any idea about where her uncle has hidden his patents and other stuff. However, she isn’t aware of the same.

Zosia tells them that yesterday, after they learned about Wladyslaw being alive, he had called her for a conversation.

The detectives ask her to explain in detail. But she brushes the question aside by saying it was a casual chat and nothing more.

Before leaving, Zosia plants a doubt in their mind by putting the blame on Karen on account of a conversation she overheard the last night.

Apparently, Karen was in their uncle’s room and screaming his throat out. He called him a ‘miser’ and slammed the door on his way out.

Though she didn’t let the cops know about her conversation with the old man, we get to see it in a flashback.

What Was Wladyslaw’s Conversation with Zosia About?

Wladyslaw knew more about Zosia than she thought. He knew that she was having an affair with her boss.

This was a part of his homework for the game he was developing. Wladyslaw suggested that she should not hide it from Dawid.

If she didn’t tell him, he would.

Why Didn’t Zosia Tell the Cops About Her Meeting with Wladyslaw?

If she had told them, it would have given them a reason to doubt her. They may have thought she killed the old man as he threatened to tell Dawid about her affair.

After Zosia’s interrogation, Karen sits on the chair.

What Happened at Karen’s Questioning in Inheritance?

After trying to put off Zosia’s allegations, Karen finally accepts that he indeed screamed at his uncle.

However, his reasoning is that Wladyslaw wanted him to get a girlfriend and start living a normal life.

When the cops don’t tell him the name of the person who suggested his name, Karen guesses it must be Natalia.

He then leaves the room after dropping a hint that Natalia could have killed their uncle, for the want of money.

What Was Wladyslaw’s Conversation with Karen About?

In reality, Karen asked his uncle for money to buy a new apartment.

The old man didn’t agree to the lavishness of his proposed property and refused to give him money, which is why Karen screamed at him and called him a miser.

What Happened at Natalia’s Questioning in Inheritance?

Natalia tells the cops that she has a lot of money and doesn’t need to rely on the inheritance. Therefore, she has no reason to kill her uncle.

While at it, she notices the cop’s gun, and identifies it as a ‘Sig Sauer.’ Seeing her accuracy, the other cop asks her if she is a detective.

She replies saying she is a crime novelist, which justifies her deep knowledge about weapons.

What Was Wladyslaw’s Conversation with Natalia About?

Just like others, Wladyslaw had also met Natalia the previous night. She doesn’t mention it in front of the cops.

However, we get to see it in a flashback.

Natalia expresses how sad she was upon hearing of Wladyslaw’s sudden demise. She emphasizes shedding tears in hoards.

After the initial buttering, she asks him for money (or pocket money) as Natalia’s advances have dried and she has not written a word in the last year.

Her uncle agrees to her request but puts a condition upfront. She must tell him his correct date of birth.

However, she couldn’t provide an accurate answer, ending her own hopes.

On the other hand, the other cousins are trying hard to solve the riddle.

After a lot of pondering and brainstorming, Dawid comes to the conclusion that the only thing that drove their uncle the most was his game show.

Soon, his son tells everyone that he discovered a secret door in the morning. Some pushes here and there, and the group is able to move the door.

While everybody gets in, Zosia reprimands Dawid for openly revealing his clue about Wladyslaw’s riddle.

She tells him to only share any more clues privately since they are playing for a lot of money, which can better their future.

Through the door, they enter a game show setup. It is exactly like the one their uncle used to host in his early days.

Natalia arrives at the place and informs Dawid to go in for questioning. The cousins notice a booth in the vicinity and Karel enters it out of curiosity.

He finds three buzzers inside and presses one of them after which the booth’s door shuts automatically.

Karel is now stuck inside and nobody can hear his voice, probably because the booth is soundproof.

While everybody is confused as to how he can come out, the big screen in front captures their attention with a question.

They are asked about the number of books Natalia has written to date.

Now, those outside think that the question is for Karen and he must answer on his own in order to win the game.

Nobody helps him, and hence, he answers incorrectly.

The second question is about the honeymoon location of Zosia and Dawid. And again nobody helps Karen.

It is only later that the cousins realize the game is about cooperation; it is a team game and not an individual one.

They decide to give clues to Karen from outside via their actions. In short, now they are playing dumb charades.

What Happened at Dawid’s Questioning in Inheritance?

Dawid thinks that his uncle’s death was an accident. Strangely, he says he could do something like that only if it was extremely necessary.

Out of nowhere, he brings up the topic of Karen’s partner trying to buy a live child as he had heard him talking on the phone last night.

What Was Wladyslaw’s Conversation with Dawid About?

Again, Wladyslaw knew everything about Dawid’s life, specifically, his financial struggle. He had knowledge of his late mortgages, about which Zosia was unaware.

Like he did with his wife, Wladyslaw tells Dawid that he must tell Zosia about his debts or else he will.

Dawid refrains from mentioning this to the cops.

The game, on the other hand, goes well for the family after they understand the objective.

Dawid joins them and boosts their overall performance. One of the questions in the game is about Gustaw’s real name, which is Romeo.

Once the stage ends, we are taken to a flashback six months ago.

How Did Wladyslaw Know Everyone’s Secrets?

Six months before the gathering, Wladyslaw had called each of his children as an anonymous surveyor.

He asked them about their personal information and offered a large sum of money in return.

Greed made the cousins give him the data, which allowed the old man to prepare his game.

Nobody, except Henryk, knew that Jozefina had two phones, not even her parents.

She had given her spare phone to the cops and kept the original one with her all this time.

She receives a call from the police informing her about their inability to reach the residence due to the heavy snowstorm.

The two kids realize that the guys who are already there are not real cops. They combine with Natalia to investigate the matter further.

She seconds their opinion saying cops don’t use Sig Sauers. Natalia tells them to connect to the WiFi somehow and call for help.

When Henryk says they can use the mansion’s WiFi, Natalia informs him that the password is really difficult, meaning they would have to up their guessing game.

The trio leaves the company of the others and tries to figure something out. But their voyage is short-lived as the fake cops come in their way.

They take Jozefina for questioning, but since she is yet to become an adult, Natalia goes along.

Interestingly, before the fake detectives notice him, Henryk pulls a lever in the narrow pathway of the lobby and walks into a secret staircase underneath the floor.

Natalia tests the two cops and asks them about their designation in the police department.

This is the first time the names of the fake cops are disclosed in the story. One of them is Bednarski and the other is Gudejko.

On the other hand, in a video on the tablet, Wladyslaw informs everyone about the next level of the game.

A subtle clue hints at an escape room game on the second level.

Zosia fakes difficulty in breathing to take Dawid out of the room where everybody is assembled.

She refers to a call he had received on his phone while she was being questioned.

In a flashback, we are shown that the caller’s name was “lady from bank.” Zosia asks her husband who was the lady.

In response, Dawid inquires why she didn’t pick up the call. Before anything else could be revealed, other people arrive to check on Zosia’s health.

Just as Natalia and Jozefina are about to leave, the latter’s phone vibrates and the cops notice it. They then take the phone and answer the call, which is from the police.

Since the last call ended due to poor connectivity, the real cops want to know more about the situation.

However, Bednarski tells him that his kids played a prank on them by reporting a murder.

What follows are some revelations.

Why Did the Two Cops Fake Their Identity in Inheritance? What Did They Want?

While it might seem like they lied to the family, it wasn’t the case. The duo was there to steal something but when Dawid referred to them as cops, they decided to blend in.

They didn’t even know Wladyslaw was dead until then.

They were at the mansion to steal something of importance to their employers. It was probably present in the patents of the old man.

Henryk travels through the secret door to his room and takes out his laptop. He then consistently tries to crack the really difficult WiFi password.

To escape the eyes of any uninvited visitor, he climbs up to the almirah and grabs a stash of newspapers.

He starts reading one of them to find clues regarding the WiFi password. However, he comes across an article, “Why was the Wheel of Truth Taken off Air?”

(Wheel of Truth was the name of the game show hosted by Wladyslaw.)

The article reveals that the game ended after one of the contestants on the show tried to commit suicide.

Natalia arrives at the garage and informs the others that the cops are questioning the two kids together.

She goes on to say that the cops have given them one hour to win the game after which they will take them to the station.

Natalia doesn’t tell them about the cops being fake and that only Jozefina is with the cops.

The cousins get into a cottage inside the mansion and the door locks itself.

They share nostalgia as some objects in the hut bring back childhood memories while the Butler monitors their actions through old cameras inside.

Using the microphone feature, he asks Dawid about the chocolate box from which everybody has taken some chocolates to eat. The latter shows the box to the butler.

He quickly identifies it and breaks the bad news to them.

The chocolates were among Wladyslaw’s experiments with hallucinogenic psychoactive substances.

They had a truth serum in them and anyone eating even one of them would start speaking the truth very bluntly.

Dawid ate seven chocolates and some of the others had a few.

Those who didn’t eat any chocolate include Zosia and Karen’s partner. Dawid suggests that they should be proactive before the effects of the chocolates come into play.

They do the same and quickly begin searching the cottage for clues to help them open the door. Dawid uses his brain and finds the first clue, which hints at the number 6.

He tells others that they need to think of something that shocked them in the cottage in their early years.

Soon, the effects of the truth serum kick in. This makes Dawid go crazy as he goes from being a reserved guy to a highly blunt one with truth sparking out of his mouth. The cousins come up with shocking revelations that include personal information like a small penis, absence of sex, etc.

The butler informs the two cops about the situation and calls them to the CCTV monitoring room. Jozefina is with them.

They notice that Henryk is absent and one of the cops goes to find him. The young kid is still trying to figure out the password.

Eventually, he realizes that the password is literally, “really difficult.”

Gudejko accidentally pulls the lever and falls into the same secret tunnel.

Henryk hides inside the almirah to escape from his eyes.

At the cottage, Natalia opens up to Jozefine. She tells her that she has had two husbands and cheated on both.

She praises Dawid saying there are very few men like him left in the world.

Due to the truth serum’s effect, Dawid tells his wife about returning his grant since he doesn’t want to live away from her for months.

Moreover, he also speaks about them splitting up in front of everybody, even those seeing them from the monitoring room.

Thinking it is the right time, Natalia asks Romeo if he is with her only for the money but the latter denies the same and confesses his love for her.

Natalia then informs everyone that the cops in the house are not real and tells them everything.

Hearing that his kids might be in danger, Dawid goes mad and tries to open the door by banging his head against it.

It hurts him but he accidentally helps them find the final number to open the door.

Upon going through, they confront the cops and get to meet Jozefine. The other detective brings Henryk as well.

Wladyslaw informs them about the next level through a video. He drops another riddle and the lights turn off.

With arrow signs lighting up across the house, the inhabitants follow them to find their way through. They end up at a door that requires the old man’s fingerprint.

As the family carries Wladyslaw’s body to the door, Bednarski takes away Henryk with them, giving them 15 minutes to end the game and find the patents.

As a precaution, the butler voluntarily goes along with Henryk. And Gudejko goes with the cousins.

Once the fingerprint is used, the door opens and takes them into another room, which has a table upon which are several cuffs.

The cousins remember the riddle and connect each other with cuffs, realizing that the game can only be won together.

Since Henryk is not there, Gudejko takes his place and puts on the cuff. Once they are connected together, a way lightens up in front.

Dawid rightly considers it a maze that they must get through to win the final part. He leads the pack, as he has been a champion maze runner in the past.

Henryk and the butler are kept in the monitoring room with their hands tied. He thinks the maze is about their family tree and once they pass all the members’ photos.

But eventually, he figures out that they have to find themselves. Upon mapping the youngest person, Henryk, they are finally able to solve the labyrinth.

The doors open and they enter a compartment. As they cross the door, the cuffs dislodge on their own and they are free again.

A box kept in the middle of the room captures their attention. They think that the patents are inside it.

The cop asks them to hand over the box and the situation becomes tense. Dawid makes use of his head once again and bangs it into the cop.

They run out to find the exit door so they can enter the mansion again.

A cat-and-mouse chase ensues between the cousins and the cop.

On the other hand, Henryk and the butler try to outsmart the detective but fail in their attempt.

Once the family finds the end of the maze, they run into the Bednarski. He aims a gun at them and asks for the box.

Henryk tries to get through him but fails. Seeing his son in danger, Dawid gets into a fight with the cop.

However, he cannot get rid of him either.

In the end, the cop aims his gun at Dawid and just when he is about to pull the trigger, Zosia kicks his balls so hard that he becomes unconscious.

The family takes Wladyslaw’s body back to where it was but is interrupted by the arrival of the real cop who was supposed to come in the first place.

Soon, the police take away the fake cops and the cousins heave a sigh of relief.

The cops initially concluded that it was an unintentional suicide because the old man forgot that he wasn’t wearing his knife-proof clothing and stabbed himself for fun.

After the hubbub ends, the cousins open the box and, to their surprise, find it empty. A video of Wladyslaw plays out on the tablet.

He congratulates everyone on completing the game and says all his patents are safe and sound. Moreover, the old man promises to tell them more about it at dinner.

Sadly, he is no longer alive to fulfill his promise.

At the dinner table, the cousins are happy despite not getting rich. They are joyous in each other’s company.

Henryk and Jozefine confront their parents and ask about “doctor.” Zosia tells them that they were talking about their lawyer named Robert Doctor.

Furthermore, they are no longer going for a divorce.

Romeo officially proposes to Natalia for marriage.

The two Karens decide to stay in Poland instead of looking for a property elsewhere.

The next morning when they are about to leave with their luggage, the real cop arrives with a shocking revelation.

He handcuffs Natalia for the murder of her uncle. However, just then, Romeo accepts that he was the one who committed the act.

He goes on to confess his crime.

What Did Gustaw (Romeo) Confess at the End of Inheritance Movie?

He didn’t eat any truth chocolate.

Even though he lied, he never lied about loving Natalia.

He met Natalia not for the money or because he fell in love with her at first sight. It was all a plan. He knew she belonged to the Fortuna family.

Gustaw wanted to get close to Wladyslaw. But why?

In 1990, Gustaw’s grandma, who had raised her, participated in Wladyslaw’s game show, The Wheel of Truth.

Gustaw believed that in the last round the old man gave her a misleading hint, which is why she lost and went into depression.

The lady later tried to commit suicide.

In the aftermath of the incident, Gustaw was sent to an orphanage and blamed Wladyslaw ever since.

In the process of planning for revenge, he didn’t realize when he actually fell in love with Natalia. And when it did happen, Gustaw gave up on vengeance.

The moment he found out about Wladyslaw’s demise, Gustaw felt relieved. But when he appeared out of nowhere and revealed he faked his death, he was dumbfounded.

The same night, he bumped into the old man accidentally and they sat for a conversation.

Wladyslaw knew all along about Gustaw’s identity as part of the game.

During their conversation, they got into an argument over the hint given by the old man to her grandmother back then.

According to Wladyslaw, he never misled the lady and gave the correct clue. However, she misconceived it and gave the wrong answer.

Gustaw got agitated after Wladyslaw didn’t admit his mistake. In the heat of the moment, he picked up the knife kept on the table and stabbed him in the gut.

The fact is Wladyslaw was under the influence of the truth serum and he couldn’t have lied at that moment. However, Gustaw was unaware of this.

Had he not eaten the chocolates, maybe the old man would have stayed mum about the past.

On the other hand, Gustaw didn’t know he wasn’t wearing his bulletproof shirt. He was angry and just wanted to vent it out, which he did by stabbing him.

How Did the Cops Know Gustaw Was the Killer?

All thanks to the little kid, Henryk. He read about Gustaw’s grandmother in the newspaper article while sitting atop the almirah.

He connected the dots and remembered the first time everyone saw Wladyslaw’s body.

When Gustaw came into the kitchen that morning, he naturally spoke of “uncle wearing his normal shirt instead of the bulletproof one.”

How would he have known about this unless he was the one who killed him?

Henryk informed the real cops about his theory who asked him to stay mum.

Due to the lack of any hard evidence, the cops played a bluff by calling Natalia the killer.

Gustaw loved Natalia and hence, accepted his crime.

What Happened Afterwards?

Natalia and Gustaw got married while the latter served his sentence. She also wrote a book about that weekend titled, “Death of a Game Show Host.”

The butler bought the mansion as Wladyslaw used to pay him enough for his services.

Dawid’s family started living happily ever after.

Where Did Wladyslaw Keep His Patents?

Well, the old man was unconventionally mysterious. He had hidden his patents in a pen drive, which was kept inside the special cube he had gifted to Henryk.

The kid wouldn’t have known about it had he not accidentally cracked its code while on his way back home from the mansion.
