America’s new creation, a rom-com, is now streaming on Netflix. The film titled A Family Affair is a bit under two hours.

Here is the ending explanation of the movie, where I detail the last forty minutes and draw minor conclusions at the end.

A Family Affair Netflix Movie Ending Explained

Leila asks Brooke to invite Chris over for Christmas without telling Zara.

She takes it upon herself to talk to the young girl about her mother’s brewing relationship.

Leila tells Zara about Brooke’s struggle after her father’s demise. She never looked out for a partner and instead focused all her energy on raising Zara.

Now, when she is grown up, she must not come in the way of Brooke finally falling for someone. But Zara feels that Chris is a self-absorbed and selfish man.

She would have had no issues if it was anyone other than him.

Leila says, she has no business in her mom’s relationships and should let her live on her own will.

Chris’ car honks outside, breaking their conversation midway. Seeing him, Zara becomes restless and sad but her grandmother tells her it was her decision.

Leila wants to assess the situation so that nobody is hurt. She directs Zara to not spoil the Christmas mood and fake it if need be.

At the dinner table, Laila shares a story from her early days and makes everyone laugh. Chris responds by saying it is the craziest story he has ever heard.

He has done a lot of crazy stuff in movies but very little in real life. They indulge in some happy moments and even Zara is pretty happily involved in them.

Chris gets emotional and shares that he hasn’t had a home to go to for Christmas for a very long time. Hence, he thanks the family for inviting him over.

The dinner ends with a toast for Leila.

Later in the night, Brooke shares an emotional conversation with her mother-in-law.

She talks to her about how Charlie, her husband, was planning to get divorced from her days before he was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease.

The reason behind it was one of his books, which was close to his heart, didn’t grab the expected sale numbers while Brooke’s book, also released around the same time, grabbed eyeballs.

Though he supported her, it was difficult for him.

Now, she doesn’t want the same thing to repeat with Chris.

But Leila motivates her to go for what her heart desires. If she is happy with Chris, she shouldn’t think of the end.

Instead, Brooke should focus on the positive start. Personally, Leila is mighty impressed with Chris and has no problems if they continue with the relationship.

Zara listens to their conversation from a distance without letting them know.

The next day, Chris gifts everyone their Christmas presents. Grandma gets a stole and Zara gets a banner with “Associate Producer” written alongside her name.

Brooke, meanwhile, receives the most precious gift: her essays from the New Yorker, Vogue, and all her short stories in one place as an anthology.

The trip is almost about to end on a happy note when Zara accidentally comes across a pair of golden earrings inside Chris’ bag.

It is the same pair he always gives to her girlfriends when he is about to break up with them.

Zara assumes that Chris is about to leave her mother as well, which is why he has it in his bag.

When they reach home, Zara confronts Chris sitting with Brooke in the kitchen.

She tells her mother that Chris is not serious about her and shows them the ring.

Further, Zara talks about the past when Chris used to break up with girls with diamond earrings as a parting gift.

She mentions a trip to New York Street as the beginning of his modus operandi of fooling girls.

Her mother is heartbroken and asks Chris to leave her house.

They don’t give him a chance to explain himself while he does try to do so.

After he is gone, Brooke tells Zara that she could have done things differently without humiliating her so much.

Zara decides to stay at Genie’s for the night. However, the latter reprimands her for making everything about her.

It has been some time since she broke up with Malcolm but she couldn’t tell Zara because she never listens to her problems.

Even the last time she stayed at her house, they only pretended to be together for her mental health’s sake.

Genie thinks Zara is not grown up enough to care about anybody other than herself.

They have a pretty bad argument and Zara leaves her house before finding space at another friend’s place.

But she makes it up to Genie and apologizes to her on New Year’s Eve. They spend the night together.

Neither Brooke nor Chris celebrate New Year as they stay inside their houses alone, heartbroken thinking about the past.

At the movie set, Zara has her task cut when Chris is not ready to come out of his vanity van. He is sitting on the floor, sad, and hopeless about life.

He asks about her mother and tells her that it was never his intention to break up with her. Even though he thought about it once, it was just a passing idea.

He bought the earrings as a Christmas present before he had the idea of organizing all her write-ups together.

Chris has a habit of running from things that are too good for him. Moreover, the thing with Brooke was different because he has never fallen in love with anyone at New York Street.

After hearing him fully, Zara realizes she may have made a mistake and judged him wrongly.

She goes back home and finds her mother packing her stuff to leave for Princeton. She denies the relocation having any connection with Chris.

However, having realized her mistake already, she plans to unite the two lovers.

How Does Zara Reunite Brooke and Chris?

Zara teams up with her grandma, Leila. She brings Chris to a grocery store on the pretext of making him shop in a grocery store for the first time in ages.

On the other hand, Leila asks Brooke to buy her some horned melons from the same grocery store.

This is how Brooke and Chris meet up after their harsh breakup some days ago.

Zara accepts that she was wrong about Chris and apologizes to them.

She lets them be as they kiss each other for a happy ending to A Family Affair.

Chris tells Brooke that he felt like an island of one in her absence, referring to a specific passage from one of her books. In essence, he meant that being alone has already done a lot of harm to him.

He no longer wishes to be alone. All he wants is her presence in his life.

The movie takes a leap of one year.
