Parasyte: The Grey: Episode 5 Recap

The final episode of the Korean show starts with the back story of Won-seok and sheds light on how the cop became corrupt.

Why Did Won-seok Side With the Parasites?

Though he was quite well off, his wife thought of him as a loser.

She wanted their children to study in an affluent school, which was not possible with his penny-worthy job as a police officer.

Won-seok’s wife would keep taunting him for this reason all the time.

One day, one of his friends told him that the pastor of the Saejin church, where he was a regular visitor, had been absent for the past few days.

The cop assured him that he would go to his house and make sure everything was fine.

When Won-seok paid a visit to the pastor, he found him sitting in front of the TV with his wife lying dead on the floor in the other room.

Before he could do anything, the pastor took out his tentacles and almost killed the detective.

He then offered him to choose between death and the parasite organization.

Won-seok took the second option and started working for the parasites from that point onward.

How he earned money by helping the parasites is not made clear in the story.

The flashback ends and the series takes us to a press conference hosted specifically to provide information related to the parasites.

Chul-min and Won-seok take the stage and the former introduces Jeong Su-in and Seol Kyung-hee as parasites to the general public.

He urges people to call the cops if they have any information regarding the two women.

Upon hearing the news, Kyung-hee calls Kang-woo and asks for a meeting.

Though he doesn’t want to meet the murderer of her younger sister, Su-in agrees to a get-together in a public garden.

Jun-kyung confronts the cop duo and asks Chul-min the reason why he is against Su-in so vehemently.

A while ago, he was ready to do anything to save the girl and now he is going public with her information.

She further asks him about the thing that he had recovered at the Saejin Church that belonged to Su-in.

However, Chul-min fails to remember anything about the keychain and leaves the place along with Won-seok.

The latter suggests the urgent need to eliminate the captain since she is now suspecting them like never before.

At the garden, Heidi decides to leave Kang-woo a few meters away from the meeting spot.

She does this because Kang-woo wants Kyung-hee dead, and his possible actions can lead to panic in a public place.

Kyung-hee tells Heidi that the pastor (Chul-min) made use of the parasites and then drifted towards leading the human race.

He betrayed their organization and she is more than willing to punish him for his deeds.

However, Heidi thinks more practically and says she cannot risk her existence for Kyung-hee’s goals.

Suddenly, Kang-woo comes from behind and attempts to stab Kyung-hee but she effortlessly stops him from doing so.

She tells the duo that if Chul-min takes over the mayor’s body, humans will soon kill them on his instructions.

Hence, even in that scenario, their existence would be threatened. Eventually, the trio agrees to work together and kill Chul-min at the music festival.

Why Did Chul-min Parasite Wanted to Take Over the Mayor’s Body?

The parasite was hungry for power and wanted to rule over humans.

It would have given him a chance to turn more people into parasites.

Apparently, Jun-kyung had asked someone to reexamine the Hunting Dog’s wounds.

The guy calls her to check the test results. She finds out that his wounds were not necessarily a result of a parasite’s tentacles.

It was possible to replicate such a wound with a knife. Kang-woo had earlier told her that Won-seok killed the Hunting Dog with an iron knife.

The captain suspects foul play and several theories start running inside her head.

But she is interrupted by a phone call and upon reaching the conference room, she is informed that General Kim Sang-su has received her report regarding the discovery of a pantry symbol in Gangwon-do.

The captain is surprised since she didn’t send any such report. However, she soon finds out that it was Chul-min behind the same.

The General orders her to leave for Gangwon-do with her team and ascertain whether or not the intel is true.

This was a ploy by Won-seok and Chul-min to keep her away from the music festival.

All the responsibility for the event now falls on the shoulders of the Namil cops, which is what the duo wanted.

Heidi calls Jun-kyung, who is on her way to Gangwon-do and informs her about what is to happen at the music festival.

She also shares that Won-seok is not a parasite but he serves the pastor. Plus, he is the one who killed the Hunting Dog.

Heidi tells her that they are going to the music festival to eliminate Chul-min and stop him from taking control of the mayor’s body.

Moreover, she expects Jun-kyung to be there in case any contingency occurs.

Thinking about her proposition, the captain eventually decides to turn around and go to the music festival instead of Gangwon-do.

At the event, Kang-woo takes it upon himself to keep an eye on Chul-min while Su-in and Kyung-hee hide in the parking lot.

It is done because if they come near the cop, he would receive a brain wave and become cautious.

A while later, Chul-min launches an attack on the mayor and sends the public into panic mode.

Won-seok pretends to save the mayor and follows the duo into an enclosed space.

He comes out with the mayor and leaves behind the headless body of Chul-min.

The detective then, along with another cop, escorts the mayor to a safe place but nobody knows he himself is the biggest danger.

Jun-kyung arrives at the venue and spots Su-in and Kyung-hee in the parking lot.

Heidi tells her counterpart to go inside while she takes care of the captain.

The two indulge in a fight which only ends after Heidi tells the cop that she doesn’t want to hurt anybody.

All she wants is to coexist on the planet. She leaves the spot and Jun-kyung doesn’t go after her, an indication of her growing trust in the girl.

Won-seok reaches a safe space along with the mayor and a cop. He quietly takes out Chul-min’s parasite head from inside his shirt.

It kills the other detective and moves toward the mayor. However, Kyung-hee arrives and saves the official.

Kang-woo spoils Won-seok’s bid to shoot his elder sister, who then advises him to leave with the Mayor and tries her level best to put the duo in a safe place.

She even apologizes to him for whatever she, as a parasite, has done to him.

In the following battle against the pastor, she succumbs to some powerful blows.

The pastor’s parasite then betrays Won-seok and takes over his body.

Kang-woo and the mayor run for their lives with Won-seok behind them. He almost achieves his goal of killing the mayor but Heidi comes at the right time to foil his bid.

She directs Kang-woo to leave for a safer place. The man safely escorts the Mayor to the security outside who then evacuates him safely.

Won-seok’s voice asks Heidi why she sided with humans when she first came to the church.

Heidi answers him saying she didn’t think the parasites would trust a mutant.

They indulge in a hollow conversation while Heidi searches for him.

There is also a small parasite lurking around, which may have come out of Kyung-hee’s body.

Or maybe, Won-seok released it from the back of his head somehow.

Won-seon then talks about the command given to them (the parasites) at the time of birth, which is “take over a human brain.”

He believes that the command means to take over the whole human organization instead of just the physical human brain.

He invites Heidi to join him in the quest of conquering the human breed.

This is when Jun-keong arrives at the location, aiming her gun at them.

She initially points at Heidi with Won-seok motivating her to pull the trigger.

Heidi sees the small parasite behind the captain and opens her tentacles to eliminate the threat before it enters her body.

Simultaneously, Jun-keong notices the reflection of Won-seok’s empty back head and shifts her aim at him before shooting several rounds of fire.

After he is dead, the captain asks Heidi if she knew she would shoot at Won-seok.

But the parasite replies saying she didn’t know anything but only trusted her because of Su-in.

Heidi further talks about Su-in being a strange girl as she continues to trust people even though she has been badly hurt by her own in the past.

She chooses to be a vulnerable entity. Moreover, she wants to live in the company of her own people.

Heidi goes unconscious upon hearing Kang-woo’s voice. When Team Grey enters the premises, the captain lets Su-in go calling her a normal young woman.

The story takes a leap forward and we see Su-in working in a grocery store. She meets Kang-woo and they go on a walk.

He tells her that he has now joined Team Grey, headed by Jun-keong. He now has good clothes and insurance.

Kang-woo takes out a letter mailed to him by Heidi. He reads it out for Su-in.

The letter is an emotional ode to the girl for allowing the parasite to reside inside her body.

Heidi ends it up by saying whether Su-in likes it or not, she is never alone, meaning the parasite will live inside her forever.

While leaving, Kang-woo tells her that Jun-keong has a place for her on the team. And she can join any time.

The scene cuts to the Grey HQs. A journalist called Shinichi comes to meet Jun-keong.

He is an expert in the field of parasites and wants to share some very important intelligence.

This is where the first season of Parasyte: The Grey ends without revealing much about Shinichi.
