A new rom-com from Spain recently made its Netflix debut. Called Love, Divided, it is almost 100 minutes in length.

The movie is directed by Patricia Font and it stars Aitana, Fernando Guallar, Natalia Rodriguez, and Adam Jezierski in lead roles.

In this blog, I explain the film’s story in detail, including its ending.

Love, Divided 2024 Movie Explained

Valentina, a young woman in her twenties, shifts to a new apartment.

A pianist by passion, she dreams of winning a grand audition to professionally begin her journey in the field of music.

Her cousin, Carmen, helps her set up the place and even gets her a job at her ex-husband’s café.

The other protagonist in the movie is a game developer and goes by the name David

He never steps out of his house. It has been three years since he last walked out of the confines of his home.

Interestingly, Valentina has moved into the apartment parallel to his, making them neighbors.

The only person David ever meets is his best friend, Nacho

He is the one who brings his daily supplies. And because of specific reasons, none of his neighbors last more than a day.

David’s last fully developed game was Breaking Mind. Ever since, he has been stuck on his new creation, which he calls Paradox.

On her first night at the new home, Valentina hears some loud, eerie sounds. Feared, she calls Carmen but the latter doesn’t pick up.

She is scared to the core when the noises do not subside.

Eventually, Valentina runs out of the house and spends the night at Oscar’s place, her ex-boyfriend.

Oscar sounds slightly condescending, dominating, and overpowering.

He decries her decision of moving into the neighborhood saying she is not yet ready to live alone.

Not only that, he even insists she move back with him but Valentina gently refuses.

Oscar serves her a special drink, Rooibus. Apparently, it is her favorite beverage.

She lies to Oscar about her job and says it involves playing the piano when in reality, she works as a waitress.

While Valentina sleeps in the room, her ex spends the night on the sofa.

The next morning, she inquires about the noises with one of the residents of her building.

However, the man doesn’t give straightforward answers and instead jokes about a fictional ghost story.

Valentina reluctantly goes back to her house but the noises start again. Though she is frightened, the young woman observes the sound carefully and follows its path.

It leads her to the wall of her living room.

David, on the other hand, totally occupied with his game’s development, accidentally drops a wrench on the floor.

This makes things clear to Valentina as she realizes the noise is coming from a human and not a supernatural source.

It was actually David working on his game, which led to the loud noise.

Valentina is shocked to learn the truth. She asks him why he wants to scare her.

But David explains himself saying their apartments lack insulation and even if one of them pours coffee into a cup, the person on the other side can easily hear its sound.

In the past, David has tried to take care of the issue but the residents of the building never agree to spend money on the same.

When Valentina asks him to come to the hall and talk in person, he replies saying they are in different buildings.

Not only that, but they are also in different districts.

He calls it a ‘structural anomaly.’ Further, he wants Valentina to adjust since he works from home and his job requires absolute silence.

The woman asks for a middle way; to set up work timings but David doesn’t agree.

He wants one of them to leave and since he was there first, Valentina should be the one to go. But she doesn’t agree and decides to hold her fort.

David takes it as a challenge and in the next few days, he tries everything he can to piss her off.

From playing loud sounds to developing new ways to irritate her.

Valentina, on the other hand, sticks to playing piano, which ends up disturbing David’s work.

After a few days, a devastated Valentina finds it hard to sleep and focus.

Carmen motivates her to give it back to her neighbor and she does exactly the same by simply putting up a metronome near the wall dividing the two apartments.

Since David requires absolute silence, the small move hampers his concentration and he eventually gives up.

He also agrees to a middle path, giving Valentina the mornings to play piano and settling for the evening time for his work.

The next few days work really well for the duo and they stick to their timings without a hassle.

Every day, David observes her piano practice.

He discovers that she is not that good at playing Beethoven as she lacks the rage, anger, and emotion required to achieve perfection.

But the woman is not impressed. She questions his judgment.

However, David replies saying his father was a sound engineer and he spent his childhood in music studios listening to classical recordings.

When Valentina doesn’t stop, she calls her a robot and she calls him an unbearable, cranky, and arrogant man.

David notices that the minute she gets angry listening to his critical blabber, Valentina produces a perfect result at playing Beethoven.

Both of them apologize to each other in the evening.

David tells her that he has been working on his latest game, the Ultimax, for three years.

Valentina shares that she is practicing for a very big audition, which would massively help her career.

He praises her voice and suggests that she should sing as well.

However, Valentina mentions Oscar, her ex, who once told her to focus solely on the piano.

She describes him as an orchestra conductor and the most talented musician she has ever met.

They share a deep conversation, where David talks about his love for old-fashioned westerners and cowboy boots.

When asked, he further describes his physical composition, from his height to his hair color.

He is not a social person, the reason behind him not stepping out.

Both agree on the fact that silence should be enjoyed.

The next morning begins on a soothing note for the duo.

Having heard David’s description, Valentina looks out for men matching his physical attributes.

She specifically keeps out an eye for men wearing cowboy boots.

One of the visitors in her café matches the features and she invites him for dinner at her apartment, thinking him to be David.

Nacho calls David and tells him that his car has been towed. All his belongings are in the car and since he doesn’t have any cash on him, he asks David to bring some.

But the latter is reluctant to step outside after a three-year hiatus.

Nacho somehow manages to convince him.

On his way to his friend’s location, David unknowingly crosses paths with Valentina.

Neither of them react or even see each other.

When he meets Nacho, David finds out that he has fooled him.

His car wasn’t towed. Instead, he set him up for a meeting with the executives of a company dealing in toys.

It wants to buy the rights to all his toys, including the latest one, to sell them better.

But David seems disinterested. He wants to keep selling them at their store (apparently, he and Nacho have a toy store of their own).

He believes that multinational outlets like theirs kill small stores and hamper the minds of children with their tactics.

He creates a scene and angrily walks out of the meeting, embarrassing his friend in front of the executives.

Valentina’s date for the night arrives at her home. She finds it strange when he asks more about her and describes himself as a singer.

Eventually, when a noise comes out of David’s house, she realizes that she has got the wrong guy. Valentina wastes no time in sending him back home.

She then talks to David and tells him that she missed his voice. They remember yesterday’s talk with David saying it felt nice talking to someone after so long.

Valentina shares the feeling.

He invites her over for dinner or a drink but she says things are perfect as is. Both agree that being together doesn’t mean physical proximity.

Even if they are separated by a wall, they can still be in a relationship.

They end up agreeing to the unusual agreement of staying as lovebirds but living on their own side.

Both move their bed closer to the wall and start interacting regularly.

Valentina talks about her past while David tells her about his game.

They eat together, play together, and laugh together without the fuss of ever meeting each other or having expectations.

At the café, Valentina comes across the unexpected presence of Oscar. She doesn’t want him to know that she works as a waitress.

Hence, the woman tries to avoid him. Carmen comes to her rescue just at the right time to save her from the embarrassment.

They sit together for a drink as Oscar reveals that the number of people auditioning this time has doubled from last year’s audition.

Carmen makes up a story of her wallet being stolen and asks Oscar to take her to the police station.

She does this to make Valentina less uncomfortable.

Sebastian, the owner of the café, motivates the woman so she is not afraid of the higher number of contestants in the audition.

Back home, David requests Valentina to sing her song with the piano. Initially reluctant, she agrees and sings a beautiful melody.

The next morning, he teaches her to cook lasagna. However, she is clearly terrible at it.

Both of them invite their respective best friends, Nacho and Carmen, for dinner, serving them self-cooked meals.

Nacho notices something amiss about David. For a change, he is well dressed, well combed, and smells nice.

On the other hand, Carmen finds it surprising that Valentina has cooked by herself. Both introduce their friends to each other and tell them that they are in a relationship.

However, Nacho and Carmen find it strange to be separated by a wall and agree to never see the other person.

They discuss the pros and cons of a relationship separated by a physical wall.

Nacho voluntarily decides to describe what Carmen looks like and gets all the aspects wrong.

On the contrary, Carmen is on the mark while listing out his physical attributes.

The dinner ends on a positive note overall but neither Carmen nor Nacho agree to the idea of dating without seeing each other.

Valentina goes to the place where the auditions are to happen to complete some paperwork before observing Oscar’s orchestra class.

He reveals that he knows that she works at the café.

But also agrees that he is yet to win her trust.

Oscar tells her to believe in her abilities and everything will be fine on the audition day.

In the evening, Valentina comes back home and tells David that Oscar is coming over to oversee her preparations.

She asks him to remain silent since it is really important for her.

However, David doesn’t seem happy with Valentina’s ex-boyfriend coming over.

Jealousy grows bigger when Oscar gifts something to her, for which he went to every antique shop in Paris.

Valentina tries hard but fails to play the piano to the best ability in front of Oscar.

He tries to calm her down, offering her inspiring words.

He sits beside her and attempts to kiss her.

But Valentina shoos him away. She asks him to leave.

This is when David starts making eerie noises and Valentina is forced to remove Oscar from her house haphazardly.

An argument ensues between the couple. She accuses David of being rude and he comes back saying she should have introduced him to his ex.

After several literal blows at one another, Valentina questions his attempt to overshadow her independence.

The next day, she shares the incident with Carmen and then asks for a full day’s leave for the audition from Sebastian.

He wishes her good luck and motivates her for the performance.

Carmen goes to Valentina’s apartment with her fling and has sex with him on her bed. David, listening to all the noises, mistakes her for Valentina.

When she comes back home from work in the evening, Valentina asks David if she can practice for a bit.

He doesn’t reply and when he does, David seems angry or disturbed.

She fails to understand the reason behind his terse replies until she sees Carmen’s scarf on the floor near her bed.

Valentina connects the dots and tries to explain herself but stops midway.

She says the whole idea of being in a blind relationship was wrong and ends things with David, proposing to leave her apartment.

Valentina then visits Carmen to return her scarf. She calms her down and even offers to clear the misunderstanding by talking to David.

But Valentina refuses the offer. Seeing her friend on the verge of giving up on the idea of love, Carmen instills hope in her.

On the contrary, David reminisces about his childhood days by looking at the videotapes from back then.

He pays a visit to their store the next day and is surprised to see banners saying the store is on sale.

Nacho tells him that nobody comes in and it is tough to continue.

He didn’t share the situation with David since he was not feeling better. Further, when David talks about the situation of his relationship with Valentina, Nacho mentions Maria.

Apparently, Maria was Nacho’s sister and David’s fiancé. She died before their wedding could take place.

Nacho advises him to start afresh by not letting Valentina go.

The stage is set and it is time for Valentina’s audition. The judges ask her to play Beethoven and she begins her performance.

However, for some reason, she is unable to play it to the best of her ability.

David knows the trigger she needs to elevate herself.

He goes backstage and deliberately makes her angry, which leads to a better outcome from her piano-playing skills.

Her performance ends and the judges ask Valentina to leave. But she stays there and begins singing her song, accompanied by the piano.

At the end of it, Carmen and family give her a standing ovation. David enjoys her song and the judges seem impressed as well.

Afterward, she meets Sebastian, Carmen, and their son in the hall and they praise her.

One of the judges comes out and gives her a contact card for a famed music band.

Though the judges didn’t select her, this particular judge was mighty impressed by Valentina’s performance.

Oscar tells her that there will be other chances. In response, a visibly satisfied Valentina says she doesn’t want to audition anymore.

She wants to perform her own song. She rushes out of the place to meet David at her apartment.

But Nacho makes a move at Carmen at the audition center and they go on an ice cream date.

At the apartment, the lovebirds indulge in a heartfelt conversation before David breaks the wall and crosses into her house. They kiss each other and Love, Divided ends on a happy note.
