Spain’s mystery thriller, Firebreak, recently premiered on Netflix, and I am here with an ending explanation of the film.

Directed by David Victori, Firebreak is 1h and 47 minutes long. The movie is about a child getting lost in the woods during a forest fire.

However, not all is as simple as it appears at first glance. Her disappearance is closely tied to family dynamics and relationships. Amidst all this is her mother, who has to find her before the fire engulfs the whole area.

Firebreak Movie Detailed Ending Explained

They tie him up inside his house while trying to get answers out of him. Luis takes his phone and finds videos of Santiago doing crazy things like digging up graves in the forest and lying inside them.

He goes to the graves’ spot and starts digging. He is joined by Mara and his wife, but eventually they find only weird plants.

While they go about it and talk theories among themselves, Dani sneaks out of their house and, probably, out of curiosity, enters Santiago’s house.

The kid is frightened to see the owner tied to a chair. Santiago manages to lead Dani emotionally to untie him and free himself.

Mara arrives at the spot and sees him approaching the room’s door. All of it happens in a jiffy, so she fails to spot Danny inside and locks the door from the outside to prevent Santiago from escaping.

However, she hears Danny’s voice soon after, although, blindsided by the want of keeping Lide safe, she selfishly ignores it.

Luis enters the scene and gets worried when he hears Danny’s cries. He asks Mara for the keys, but she doesn’t relent.

He eventually snatches the keys and opens the door. Inside, they see Santiago holding Danny with a knife to his throat.

He asks for a free pass outside in return for the child’s safety.

Left with no option, the adults agree to let Santiago go. He puts Danny inside his car and rushes away with screams of his parents echoing in the background.

A few meters away, Santiago stops and opens Danny’s side of the door, asking him to get off safely. However, the child doesn’t respond, prompting Santi to get out and do the needful himself.

But before he can drop him safely and leave the place, Luis attacks him from behind. They get into an aggressive physical scuffle.

It leaves both of them with injuries. To stop Luis from hitting him, Santi says that he knows where Lide is, but he will tell her whereabouts only to the police.

Here, he plays smart in an attempt to get out safely. The others don’t agree, though, since calling the cops in would waste a lot of time.

Santi further says that Lide is out in the woods and is alive. Thereafter, Luis and Mara go out on a search, led by Santi, with his hands tied.

Before the search, Luis asks Elena to take the car and get out safely with Dani.

The Final Search for Lide

Santi gives the duo fake directions. He actually doesn’t know where Lide is. It is all a ploy to get out of the place safely.

He leads them towards the smoke, which creates doubts in Luis’s mind.

Sensing the right moment, Santiago apologizes to Mara before getting out of their grip and running away into the smoke.

They try to find him, but the visibility dashes their hopes.

Santiago manages to free his arms and, soon after, hears faint screams from Lide asking for help.

He follows the voice and screams back, telling the child to keep shouting loudly. After a slight navigation, Santiago finds Lide in a pit.

She is scared and visibly shaken by the events. Santiago reaches out to her with his hands, but the little girl fails to hold on as the pit is too deep for her.

He then brings a piece of timber and tries to reach out to the girl again. This time, he succeeds. Lida holds the wooden piece, and Santi pulls her out of the pit.

Having inhaled a lot of smoke, she becomes unconscious soon after. Santiago lays her down on the ground and tries to wake her up.

Mara sees this from afar and misunderstands the situation. She thinks Santi is trying to hurt her child. Acting on instinct, she hits him from behind.

Santi goes blank and falls on the ground. Mara takes Lida and runs back towards the cabin. En route, the kid tells her that Santiago didn’t hurt her, and it was a bear that had tried to attack her earlier.

Instead, Santi was the one who saved her life by pulling her out of the pit.

Despite listening to all this, Mara doesn’t stop or go back to save Santiago, who might die soon due to the approaching fire.

Luis joins them, and they reach the car. She asks him to bring towels from the house. While Luis is gone, she asks Lide again about Santi, but the child’s answer remains the same.

This time, the goodness inside Mara finally comes to the fore, and she returns to the woods to save Santiago.

Luis takes the girl to the hospital. On his way, Santiago, visibly injured, appears in front of the car and asks for a ride. He doesn’t stop.

Another car coming from behind helps Santiago, and both of them reach the hospital almost at the same time.

At this point, no one knows what happened to Mara, who had gone to save Santi.

The doctors look after both Lida and Santi and eventually declare them stable. Soon, the cops come in to question Santiago about who had attacked him.

Santiago tells them that a bear had tried to attack him, but doesn’t name either Mara or Luis.

Elena also arrives at the hospital, and it appears to be a happy ending for their family.

We are shown a flashback to what happened to Mara in the woods.

What Happens to Mara in Firebreak?

Mara goes back towards the fire to save Santiago, whom she had knocked out in the first place.

She brings him back to consciousness and starts apologizing profusely for her behaviour in the past couple of hours.

Santiago doesn’t seem to be in the right state of mind, having gone through some serious trauma at the hands of people he thought he knew.

Still, he doesn’t do anything aggressive. Instead, Santi hugs Mara tightly in an emotional expression of feelings. Both vehemently cry together.

He then, without saying a word, leaves the place to hitch a ride for the hospital.

Mara, on the other hand, stays there, crying, feeling the guilt.

A bear comes in front of her, but she doesn’t budge. It is the cops who ask her to get away from the fire.

The Final Scene of Firebreak

The film’s last moments show Mara finally entering the place in her house, where her husband had taken his life.

Santiago knocks on her door and gives her a plant, Orange Flame Vine, which he has brought for Lide. It grows only after the fire, among the ashes.

Now, let’s have some Q&As.

Did Mara Sell Her House?

No, Mara kept the house as a memory, or maybe she even began living there permanently. There are several reasons that make me think this way:

Lide loved the house.

The way Mara told the cops, towards the end of the film, that nothing should happen to her house implied that she has now accepted the reality.

Another thing is, Mara seems to have forgiven her husband for doing what he did. She probably started thinking from his perspective to get a clearer picture.

The fact that she entered the specific part of the house where her husband took his life is another indication of forgiveness.

How did Lide Get Lost in the Woods in Firebreak?

Lide was frightened by a bear and ran to save herself. In the pursuit, she fell into a pit that was too deep for her to escape on her own.

Why did they doubt Santiago in the first place?

Even though Santiago was innocent from the beginning, he did have a strange or eccentric mien. His body language hinted that he was either up to something or hiding something.

Mara was a grieving mother. She had already lost her husband, and now her only child was missing. All these factors led to a torpedoed psyche.

She wasn’t thinking straight. Add to it Santiago not giving access to one of the rooms of his house, and then that bracelet in his car.

One thing led to another, and it all escalated before sane minds could prevail.

How did Mara’s Husband Die?

He was suffering from a fatal disease, but took his own life as he didn’t want to be a burden on his family.

Santiago probably gave him and out of the world experience with his rituals before he died. It allowed her husband to make the decision.

Again, these are my assumptions. Her husband’s death is never explicitly detailed in Firebreak.
