Why would a popular private bank not jump into what’s possibly the best era for credit cards in India?

Well, the bank is Kotak Mahindra, and the answer to the question is given below.

The RBI prohibited the bank from issuing any new credit cards until the end of March 2025 due to a faulty IT infrastructure.

While this is the reason you don’t see flashy credit card ads from Kotak, the financial institution already has a few good credit cards up its sleeve.

And I am here to share my KOTAK PVR Platinum Credit Card review. I have been using it for the last 18 months or so.

Let’s delve into the details and examine the characteristics of the card.

KOTAK PVR Platinum Credit Card Features

The bank has partnered with VISA as the payment network for the card. There aren’t too many sparky rewards or cashback schemes associated with it.

You get the tap-and-pay option, which is also quite common these days, in addition to the usual payment and EMI conversion features.

It can give you a VIP feeling when you are transacting at PVR cinemas. There are offers on F&B and ticket booking discussed below.

Benefits of the KOTAK PVR Platinum Credit Card

Well, the benefits are all about PVR and movies. With the KOTAK PVR Platinum Credit Card, you get 2 movie tickets up to Rs. 400 each per month.

Therefore, the total monthly benefit is Rs.800, assuming you use the full Rs.400 to book each ticket.

However, the catch is that you have to spend Rs. 10,000 in a monthly billing cycle to be able to receive the benefit listed above.

You can also avail a flat 5% discount if you book tickets using your card from the PVR app/website. There are no spending criteria to use this offer. But, in terms of value, this isn’t much.

The next reward is that you can avail a flat 15% discount on F&B inside a PVR cinema hall (hit and miss).

It is also applicable to online F&B transactions done on the PVR app/website while booking tickets.

Annual Charges

The bank charges Rs.999 (excluding GST) annually for the card, and there’s no spend criteria explicitly mentioned to get rid of it.

In addition to this, if you do international transactions using the KOTAK PVR Platinum Credit Card, you will have to pay a 3.5% forex markup fee.

My Experience with the KOTAK PVR Platinum Credit Card

I am a total movie buff, which is why I got this card. Earlier, I had the Kotak League Credit Card. It offered no value.

The true value of the KOTAK PVR Platinum Credit Card lies in the benefits it offers for each ticket. You can book a recliner for literally no cost.

Obviously, you will have to pay the taxes and convenience charges, but the benefit just nullifies all of them.

Usually, I used to book the middle row seats in PVR that were available for around Rs. 250, and I always had this intention of upgrading to the top row, but the cost was too high at Rs. 320-350.

Recliners in PVR are mostly available at a price in excess of Rs. 350.

So, for me, the Rs. 400 benefit came as a blessing.

The best part is you need not book two tickets in one go, which most of the movie credit cards do out there.

This is advantageous because I typically watch movies alone.

Now, for the downsides, the coupon codes sometimes do not get automatically credited to your KOTAK Bank’s mobile application.

It happened to me 3-4 times when I had to call customer care and calculate with them my monthly expenditure and then tell them I hadn’t received the coupon codes, only to later know that the bank was facing some technical difficulties.

In these cases, Kotak credited the coupon codes either via email or in the app itself. However, the timeline during such events may extend to 15-20 days.

While this is a hassle, usually it is easy to avail the coupons.

I have also a couple of times ordered food at PVR for the 15% discount the card offers. But the experience has been mixed.

I got the discount on two occasions, while on one occasion I didn’t get it.

So, that particular moment stopped me from using it again for F&B.

I think this feature is a hit and miss because there aren’t any specific offer codes.

You just have to pay normally with your card at PVR, and if the machine detects it is a KOTAK PVR Platinum Credit Card, you get the discount; otherwise, the whole amount gets debited.

What is the Validity of the Coupon codes?

The coupon codes get credited if you spend Rs.10000 in a billing cycle. You have to claim them in the Kotak Mobile Banking application.

The codes are valid for two months from the date you claim them.

What I do is I claim them late in case the films I await are months away. You can also claim the codes late to slightly extend their validity.

For example, my statement is generated on the 26th of each month. The codes are credited by the 28th mostly.

So, instead of claiming them instantly, I wait for 15-20 days and claim them around the 14th-15th of the next month.

This sort of extends their validity.

It depends on your personal interests, though.

How to Use the KOTAK PVR Platinum Credit Card Coupon Codes in the PVR App?

You have to choose your seats like regular and then click on “Proceed to Pay.” Once you do that, you will be taken to the payment options screen.

There, you have to scroll down and click on “M-Coupon.”

Follow the onscreen instructions, and you are good to go.

Remember that you will still have to pay GST and convenience charges.

Is the KOTAK PVR Platinum Credit Card Value for Money?

See, the card offers two PVR tickets, each up to Rs. 400, with a spend criteria of Rs. 10000 a month. So, basically, you are getting Rs. 800 for spending 10k.

Annually, you can save up to Rs. 9600 (800*12). And the annual fee is Rs. 999. Therefore, the total benefit comes to around Rs. 8600.

I won’t say this is value for money because the benefit you get is for a leisure activity (movie watching) and not something that is essential (recharges, bill payments, shopping, etc.).

However, for those who love watching films in theaters and need a legit credit card for ticket booking, the Kotak PVR Platinum Credit Card is a blessing.

Is it Lifetime Free?

No, the Kotak PVR Platinum Credit Card is not free for life. It has annual charges (Rs.999+GST).
