We Were Kings Series Ending Explained
With Mike’s phone unreachable, Javo decides to take Dona Alicia to the hospital. But his vehicle is interrupted by cops midway.
They take him for the kidnapping of the old lady and the murder of Santos though the show doesn’t reveal the source of their knowledge.
I think it was Ortego who let the word out as he had secretly conducted an autopsy of Santos’ body.

The cops cover his face with a sack and take him to an undisclosed location.
Mike finds out that Ortega had ordered an autopsy and forensic ballistics test for Santos. He confronts Ortega about it.
The duo gets into a police car with Ortega in the driving seat. He tells Mike that he knew Taiguer was his father.
Strangely, Mike doesn’t ask about the autopsy and ballistic reports, and the narrative changes to his personal life.
Ortega tells him about how he had seen Taiguer and his mother’s relationship from close quarters. He then starts driving the car and takes a brief halt a few moments later.
To Mike’s extreme surprise, when the car stops, Venegas gets inside and sits in the backseat. He tries to inform the control room but Ortega stops him.
Soon, Mike realizes that Ortega works on Venegas’ paycheck. Still, he insists on arresting him as he is a dangerous criminal.
However, Ortega says Javo is no different and if they were to arrest Venegas, they must also put Javo in jail.
He has also been involved in a kidnapping. Both will get 30 years in jail and since Venegas has the money and resources, he will be treated differently in the prison.
Moreover, he will make life hell for Javo for betraying him.
Ortega offers Mike the choice to choose between letting them go scot-free or arresting them both. Eventually, he chooses the second option.
Heidi suggests Malena forgive Javier for what happened to Santos. Now since she is pregnant, Malena must look forward to being happy.
She says, Santos died in a tragedy and both he and Javier were responsible for it.
However, Malena is not convinced. She calls her son exemplary and says that he was going to be a Nazarene.
But Heidi replies saying he was not a saint or perfect and he also committed several mistakes. Angry at her remarks, Malena asks Heidi to leave her house.
But the latter throws the biggest twist to calm her down. She tells her that Santos is the father of her child.
Malena cannot believe it as she thinks Santos considered Heidi his sister, proving her point that he wasn’t a perfect man.
She holds the baby in her arms and plays with her while Heidi continues outlining how Santos lied to people about swearing as a Nazarene.
Moreover, he buried the truth about his relationship with Heidi the whole time. She drives the point that Javo and Santos are the same.
And if Malena cannot forgive Javier, she must also stop seeing her son as a saint.
With a gun pointed to his head and eyes shut with a sack, Javier finds himself in an impossible situation.
The deal with Ortega and Venegas allows Mike to reach the place in time and save Javier.
He puts him in his car and takes him to a place where they used to play as kids. A wall sits in front of them on which they used to write all their dreams.
“We Were Kings” is written over it with crayons. Mike reminds him how he wanted to be and how he eventually has turned out.
Javier asks him to be put in prison but Mike has different plans. He puts the sack back on again and takes him to his house.
When the sack is lifted, Javier is shocked to find himself standing in front of his mother, grandmother, and Heidi. Mike directs him to confess to his crimes if he wants to evade jail.
His mother throws him out of the house when she learns about the kidnapping of Donia Alicia and Javier goes to Taiguer’s garage to live.
Later, Mike sits with his mother and asks her if she has anything to explain. She narrates her relationship with Taiguer.
She tells him that they fell in love instantly and when she got pregnant, she asked Taiguer to choose between their unborn child and living life as a thief.
He went with the latter and hence it happened the way it did.
In the next scene, we see Mike meeting Javier at the garage. He suggests he leave the city as Venegas is untouchable and he is pissed at Javier.
Therefore, he may try to take revenge on him, putting even his loved ones in danger. Javier says he was also thinking the same thing.
In fact, he has already planned on moving to the northern part of the country.
Mike suggests he say goodbye to Malena, who needs closure.
The brothers hug each other and Mike tells him that he loves him forever.

Javier meets Malena who informs him that she is pregnant with his child. He gets happy but Malena wants to raise the kid alone because of Javier’s actions.
He begs in front of her not to push him away but the lady doesn’t agree.
Javier packs his stuff and leaves.
However, at the station, he experiences a change of heart looking at a couple in love.
The police department honors Mike and Ortega for their contribution to nabbing the kidnapping gang.
Expectedly, they remove Venegas’ and Javier’s names from Alicia’s kidnapping and put it all on Pitbull and El Chano.
Mike and Ortega get the Medal of Police Merit, which they dedicate to Santos. Moreover, Mike also gets promoted to the rank of second lieutenant.
After the award ceremony, Malena meets Mike in his new cabin.
He shows her Santos’ autopsy report, which states that his death was an accident and that the trigger was pulled by Santos himself.
Moreover, Mike also mentions that he could have simply put the blame on Javier and thrown him out of the picture to then pursue Malena.
But, in reality, Javo is innocent.
However, Malena is not pleased. She is not ready to accept that Santos’ death was an accident. She believes it happened because he saw her in a compromising state with Javier.
It was a nightmarish shock for him, which led to his scuffle with Javier.
She blames both herself and Javo for Santos’ death.
Furthermore, for the first time, she calls her relationship with Javo an ‘affair’ instead of love.
Plus, she also recalls asking him to end it after the first time, which happened when they were drunk.
She refuses to forgive Javier. Mike holds her hand and says that she can always count on him.
Later, everybody assembles at the graves of Santos and Taiguer. Heidi thinks of it as the right time to make the big revelation that Santos is the father of her child.
It shocks everyone but they eventually feel better as they now know the truth.
Malena and Mike walk out of the graveyard holding each other’s hands. She rests her head on his shoulders indicating the start of a new relationship.
Mike says that the kid is going to need a father and reiterates that he will always be there if she needs him.
In the final scene of the series, Javier returns to the town and offers his respects to Santos’ grave. He further says that he loves Malena, indicating a potential strengthening of their love triangle.
Who Killed Santos?
Santos got into a scuffle with Javier after seeing him with his mother. When Javier tried to snatch the gun from his hands, the trigger was pulled accidentally by Santos himself.
Therefore, it would be safe to say that Santos died in an accident. Neither did anybody kill him nor did he commit suicide.
Did Javier Leave the Town?
No, Javier didn’t leave the town. He almost wanted to but his love for Malena brought him back.
Will There be We Were Kings Season 2?
According to the story, there has to be another season of the Mexican series. However, it all depends on Netflix, which has yet to make a decision.
Additionally, I think some of the twists in the show were too superficial and poorly placed. So, it would be tough for it to return to Netflix again.
